Virus or Spyware?
Virus and Malware Information
Saturday, June 13, 2009
Virus and Spyware are a plague that have infested computers for quite some time. The virus problem goes back to the 1980’s and the spyware problem was something that occurred in the 1990’s. For this reason, there are large quantities of virus and spyware programs out there to make your computer experience not-so-pleasant.
Both infestations are like human viruses - we don’t want them and they serve no good purpose. They are small programs that write themselves to your hard drive by being loaded into memory. Virus infections are usually gotten from the user putting infected media, such as a disc or flash drive that has the program on it. Spyware usually comes from going to a website that has programs on it that infests the computer with the malicious code, also known as malware.
Besides being unwanted, the other common item with Virus and Spyware is that they write multiple copies of themselves to your hard drive.
Virus programs attempt to delete your data by overwriting it with their code. They vary from one strain to another, but most are intended to fill your computer with useless data and in some cases, to format your drive clean. With spyware, the program often contacts websites or ftp sites that place even more spyware on your computer. Some download your personal information from your computer to their site, where they use it for attacking your computer, or they sell the information to interested marketers.
