There are several possible causes for a slow computer.  If a computer is running slow, it is often not the hardware that is at fault, it is very likely to be a software issue.

First, you could have an older, slower computer.  There isn’t much help for this but to upgrade components or replace the machine.

There is also the possibility that the computer has been in use for a long time without any maintenance. This is a very common problem.

The third possibility is that you have been a victim of a virus or spyware attack.  This is most common on machines that are used to surf the Internet a lot.  It is also more common on IBM PCs and less likely (but sometimes there) on a Macintosh or Linux system.

I will now address the solutions to each of these problems, one at a time.
